TRANSLATION: JOHN HARPUR, Master of Arts, Minister of the Divine Word. His day closed whilst in his fifty-fifth year. He passed away (.....) 24th February 1657. What I am, you shall be. Death's sacrilegious hand hath treasured here within ye confines of this sepulcher. Religious ashes learned dust which have so well embalmed his corps, though in ye grave that neither death nor dark oblivion can corrupt this revrend pious learned man. INSCRIPTION ON SIDE OF TOP SLAB: Here to the honour of Deane lie the remains of JOHN HARPTUR, Vicar of Bolton from 1643 to 1657. His dilapidated tombstone bears two quaint inscriptions, which are reproduced in facsimile on this new stone, added in 1908.
