Pretoria Pit Disaster 21st December 1910

The information in this document has been copied from the Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project, to which we acknowledge full copyright. The people listed below were all had their funerals at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin Deane. And it is for that reason the information has been reproduced.

The Pretoria Pit Disaster

(No.3 Bank Pit, Hulton Colliery, Westhoughton) 21st of December 1910

Here follows a transcript of the known memorial inscriptions (MI) of those who perished in the Pretoria Pit disaster of 21 December 1910. The location of the gravestone is also recorded, but this may not be the actual place of burial. The victims are identified by a link which takes you to the data on that person (including burial details), in the list of individuals.

Born in Golden Hill, Staffordshire birth registered Wolstanton 1st Q 1885.

Recovered 25 Dec 1910 from North Plodder District: 3 yards inside west Plodder level.Identified by Joseph Baker (father).
Cause of death:Gas. Burnt.

Recovered 25 Dec 1910 from North Plodder District: 10 yards inbye west level. Identified by Alice Chadwick (wife).
Cause of death: Gas. Burnt (in Sgt. Brown's book it says "p.m. burns").
Coroner's Inquest: Alice Chadwick was Witness No.50 (Pope 1911). BEN (27 Dec 1910) report of the inquest recorded that the widow of Jesse Wallwork [this must be an error for Chadwick, who was the only victim named Jesse] said he had complained of gas.

Cause of death: Explosion. CO. Much decomposed.
Coroner's Inquest: William Cope was Witness No.16 (Pope 1911). BEN (27 Dec 1910) report of the inquest recorded that the witness said that Robert Cope had complained of gas.

Recovered 29 Dec 1910 from North Plodder District No.1 Face: near conveyor. Identified by Robert Cowburn (brother) of 3 Esther Fold, Westhoughton.
Cause of death: CO (gas). Burnt. Not decomposed.
Coroner's Inquest: Robert Cowburn was Witness No.41 and recalled after Mary Woolstencroft Witness No. 72 (Pope 1911). A report on the inquest in the Wigan Observer stated that his brother said that "he had complained of there being so much gas in the mine".

Coroner's Inquest: A report on the inquest in the Wigan Observer stated that Annie Higson said of her [step] son "He had formerly worked with his father, but latterly had been employed in the North Plodder on the conveyor". When asked by the Coroner has he ever complained of his work, Mrs Higson said "No, he said it was like going home. He used to say he wished I could go down the mine and look at it with him".

Cause of death: Explosion. CO.
Coroner's Inquest: A report on the inquest in the Leigh Journal stated that Harriet Howcroft said her husband "had never made any complaints of the conditions of his work".
